Agent 566 tells the extraordinary true story of Eliyahu (Eli) Cohen, one of the most legendary operatives in the history of Israeli intelligence. Born in Alexandria in 1924, Cohen was recruited by Mossad and operated under the alias Kamel Amin Thaabet.
From 1961 to 1965, he established himself in Syria as a charismatic businessman and successfully infiltrated the highest ranks of the Syrian political and military elite.
Through lavish social gatherings, strong personal connections, and impeccable cover, Cohen gained unprecedented access to top-secret information. He gathered intelligence on Syrian military strategies — including installations in the Golan Heights — and transmitted them back to Israel through covert radio operations and couriers.
His intelligence proved crucial for Israel’s military planning, particularly in the events leading up to the 1967 Six-Day War. Eventually, Cohen was exposed by Syrian counterintelligence, arrested during a transmission, tortured, and executed by hanging in May 1965.
