Julia, 34, is a sailor, environmentalist, and naval engineer who feels most alive when she’s on the water. Living aboard her sailboat in the bay of Paraty, she works at a small shipyard building vessels, surrounded by the coastal beauty and maritime culture that have defined her life. Paraty, a historic and vibrant seaside town nestled between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, is a hub for global sailors and nature lovers — and it’s the only home Julia has ever known.
After separating from her husband Antonio, who wanted a family and a life anchored on land, Julia is finally ready to chase her dream: to sail around the world like her childhood hero, Amyr Klink. Though she still holds deep affection for Antonio, she knows her spirit isn’t meant to stay moored.
But freedom comes at a cost. Her father Luís, a humble and devoted boat carpenter who raised her alone, is gravely ill. Julia knows she cannot leave just yet — these are their final days together, and she must be present for them, no matter how strong the pull of the open sea.
Her quiet resolve is shaken when a foreign man moves to Paraty with his 8-year-old daughter. Their arrival stirs something in Julia — feelings she wasn’t expecting, at a moment when her life is already in flux.
Open Sea is a romantic, character-driven series that explores the tension between staying and leaving, between duty and desire. As Julia stands at a personal crossroads, the series follows her emotional journey toward letting go, healing, and choosing the life she truly wants — whether that’s love, solitude, or the endless horizon ahead.
